Alternative history: What if the Carthaginians conquered Rome?

Alternative history: What if the Carthaginians conquered Rome?

Context

The Romans defined the borders of the European continent. The Roman rule had brought in civilisation, government system and structure to countries which one day would have their own empires. Before the Romans ruled the coastal areas of Southern Europe and Northern Africa, they had a strong rival, who were the Carthaginians. The Carthaginians ruled territories across the sea making fortunes by sea trade. Because there were the Romans in Southern Europe, there were tensions between the Romans and the Carthaginians. Even a war between the Romans and the Carthaginians happened three times, the first time was in 264 - 241 BC, the second time was 218 - 201 BC, whereas the third time was 149 - 146 BC. The Romans won these wars. But what if the Carthaginians won these wars instead?

Scenario

The Carthaginians were a nation which hailed from Phoenicia, which is present-day Lebanon. The city of Carthage was established in North Africa. The Carthaginians territory which used to be one city became scattered across the coastal areas of Southern Europe and North Africa. Because of that, there were between the Carthaginians and the Romans, both in the real timeline and this alternative timeline. Not only that, there are more similarities between the real timeline and this alternative timeline, such as the Punic Wars. In this alternate timelines, the Punic Wars would have happened three times and the First and Second Punic War would be won by the Romans and Hannibal would have crossed the sea from Carthage to Rome during the Second Punic War, which is no different from the real timeline. However, the Carthaginians would not have destroyed Rome and massacred its inhabitants, just as what the Romans did in Carthage in the real timeline

In this alternative timeline, the Carthaginians would control sea trade due to their defeat against the Romans. They would not only develop trade routes across the Mediterranean Sea, but they would expand further south to West and East Africa and further east to the Middle East. After controlling ports on the coast of North Africa, the Carthaginians would control the interior of North Africa and reach the Sahara, even they would go further inland to West and East Africa and they would also conquer territories further inland in Europe and the Middle East. Although the Carthaginians in this alternative timeline would have a large territory, but that does not mean that the people living in these territories would be happy with Carthaginian rule. In this alternative timeline, the Celts would have rebelled against the Carthaginians and took control of Southern Europe, then eventually expanding into Northern Europe

In this alternative timeline, the Celts and the Carthaginians would fight each other over territory to control, even in some cases winning wars. The Carthaginians would left out and their territory would diminish from what was formerly the entire region of North Africa and the western and southern coast of the Arabian Peninsula into merely one city.

There is also a similarity between the real timeline and this alternative timeline in terms of religion, which is the spread of Christianity to Europe. In the real timeline, Christianity spread to Europe due to a network between Palestine (the place where Jesus was born) and Europe and the Romans legitimising Christianity as the official religion of the Roman Empire. Whereas in this alternate timeline, the Celts would have been spreading Christianity and legitimising the religion as the state religion. The similarity between the real timeline and this alternative timeline is the existence of a network between Palestine (the place where Jesus was born) and Europe to spread religious ideas.

In this alternative timeline, the Celtic Empire would be split into two, just like the Roman Empire in the real timeline.

But that does not mean that Christians would dominate forever in North Africa and the Middle East. In this alternative timeline, Islam would still exist and Muslims living under the caliphate would fight the Christians to gain territory. Islam would still spread to North Africa in this alternative timeline.
