Alternative history: What if Fidel Castro never came to power

Alternative history: What if Fidel Castro never came to power?

Context

Cuba is a small island in the Caribbean which was a Spanish colony since the 16th century. In 1898, a war between Spain and the USA happened, then the USA annexed some Spanish colonies. In 1902, Cuba gained its independence. In 1952, there was a coup d'etat led by Fulgencio Batista, who had been president in the 1940s, against the democratically elected government in Cuba, then a year later, the people of Cuba had been angry due to corruption by the Batista regime, then many turned to communism, even a communist rebel group called the M-26-7 (26th of July movement) emerged. In 1959, the Cuban revolution happened, then Fidel Castro became the prime minister and Cuba was officially declared as a communist state. Before 1959, the USA was very powerful in Cuba. After the revolution, the USA invaded Cuba and embargoed the Cuban economy for years which had caused a missile crisis. But what if in this alternative timeline Fidel Castro never came to power?

Alternative scenario

In the real timeline, Fulgencio Batista led a coup d'état to oust the democratically elected government in Cuba in 1952, and this also happens in this alternative timeline. In both timelines, the Cubans had enough of the corruption by the Batista regime and many of them had turned to communism. Not only that, in both timelines, a large-scale communist rebellion would happen in the 1950s and the?M-26-7 movement would have still emerged.

There are some differences between the real timeline and this alternative timeline. In this alternate timeline, Fidel Castro would be executed on New Year's Day 1959 and there would be purges on communists and people who had allegedly been involved in communist rebel groups, which includes Fidel Castro's extended family. There would also be a decree banninv the spread of communism and communist symbolism in Cuba. Although Fidel Castro never came to power in this alternative timeline, but Fulgencio Batista would not remain in power. There would be someone who would come to power and write a new constitution.

In this alternative timeline, the leaders of Cuba would make Cuba as a capitalist state which would render it more open to US influence and Cuba would have been a top tourist destination for the people of the USA. The Cuban government would make Roman Catholicism as the official religion and would ban abortion, the purchase of condoms without prescription and divorce, an even ban atheism, agnosticism and Santería (a form of folk religion adhered by the Afro-Cubans). The Invasion of the By of Pigs, the Cuban Missile Crisis and the US embargo on Cuba would not have happened. In this alternative timeline, the economic growth of Cuba would have been growing much more quicker, because the economic system which would have been used in Cuba was capitalism. The authoritarian regime of the new Cuban government would end after the death of the new leader, although practices of authoritarianism would not be continued by successive governments in this alternative timeline.

But the Cuban Revolution not happening would not only affect Cuba, but it would affect the entire Latin American region. In this alternative world without the Cuban Revolution, communisn would not have spread to other Latin American countries. Without the spread of communisn in Latin America, the Che Guevara rebellion would not happen, and so would the rebellion in Colombia lead by the FARC (a socialist-communist party in Colombia), the revolution lead by the Sandistinas (a socialist party) in Nicaragua, the civil war in El Salvador (between the government and the communist rebels) and the assasination of Oscar Romero (a Catholic priest who was fighting for justice). The cause of Oscar Romero's death in this alternative timeline would not be due to assasination. In this alternative timeline, although the FARC revolution would not happen in Colombia, that does not mean that there would never be any drug cartel in Colombia, because the coca plant, which is the main ingredient for cocaine, would have grown like weed on Colombian soil and any group could take control of the illegal drug trade.

Not only the Latin American region would be affected by this alternative scenario. In this alternative timeline where the Cuban Revolution did not happen, two Portuguese colonies in Africa, namely Angola and Mozambique, would not declare their independence in 1975, because the groups fighting for independence of Angola and Mozambique in the real timeline were communist and supported by Cuba. In this alternative timeline, Angola and Mozambique would still be under the Portuguese until the 1990s. In this alternative timeline, MPLA in Angola and FRELIMO in Mozambique would not have existed, this the independence of Angola would be supported by UNITA (a nationalist party), and Mozambique by RENAMO (a nationalist party). In the real timeline, Angola and Mozambique became underdeveloped countries, whereas in this alternative timeline, both Angola and Mozambique would not be very underdeveloped, because the Portuguese had been developing industry in both of those countries. However, other Portuguese colonies in Africa would still be under Portuguese control, because there would have been no movement for the independence of these territories supported by Cuba, although other separatist movements would still exist.

In this alternative timeline, Cuba would have been a superpower in the Latin American region and would play a more prominent role in the economy of Latin America.
